As part of our comprehensive care model at Osato Medical Clinic in Torrance, California, we proudly offer advanced endoscopic services, including colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). These procedures are essential tools for diagnosing and preventing serious gastrointestinal conditions, including cancer. Performed by experienced GI specialists in our dedicated on-site surgical clinic, our endoscopy services are designed with comfort, safety, and accuracy in mind.
A colonoscopy is a vital screening procedure used to detect colorectal cancer, as well as other conditions affecting the lower digestive tract, such as inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, or sources of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Routine screening typically begins at age 45, or earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer, a history of polyps, or persistent symptoms like rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Your provider will help determine the right timing based on your personal and family medical history.
A colonoscopy uses a long, flexible tube with a camera and light to visualize the inner lining of your colon in real time. If polyps or abnormal tissue are seen, your doctor can remove them or take a biopsy during the same procedure.
You will be sedated during the exam to ensure your comfort. Most patients sleep through the procedure and wake up with little to no memory of it. Preparation involves a short-term dietary adjustment and a bowel-cleansing laxative the day before.
An EGD is used to examine the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). This test is often recommended for evaluating:
Chronic acid reflux or GERD
Unexplained upper abdominal pain
Difficulty swallowing
Chronic nausea or vomiting
Suspected ulcers or inflammation
Like a colonoscopy, an EGD uses a thin, flexible scope with a light and camera. The scope is gently passed through your mouth and throat while you’re sedated. Your provider can examine the lining of your upper GI tract in detail and may take biopsies if needed.
Both procedures are performed in our surgical suite by skilled gastroenterologists. You’ll receive full instructions before your appointment and personalized follow-up care after your exam. Most major insurances cover colonoscopy and EGD as preventive or diagnostic services.
